We all try to do our bit for the environment, but for many putting our plastic in a different colour bin is where doing our bit for the environment ends. I don’t know about you, but I feel I can use more plastic knowing there are recycling bins, as I feel that recycling looks after the consequences of my environmental actions. But how effective actually is recycling?
Not everything can be recycled, and the process of recycling plastics is not as transparent as your everyday plastic water bottle.
Not All Plastics Are Recyclable
Straws, plastic bags, coffee cups, black plastic and wrappers are examples of non-recyclable products, sadly the list is extensive. It also depends on your local council. Different areas of the UK have different schemes, in some areas you can recycle margarine tubs and in other areas you cannot. Most people in Britain regularly recycle their plastic but almost half are unsure about what type of plastic they can put in which bin according to a recent ComRes poll.
Not All Plastic Is Created Equal
Plastic is classified into 7 different categories, according to the Resin Identification Codes (RIC). Depending on how it is made, the temperature at which the material has been heated, and their numerical classification informs you of what type of plastic it is. Some of these categories include:
●(PET) For example water bottles, these are the easiest to recycle but are some of the worst for your health.
●(OTHER) This includes non-recyclables and corn-based plastics (PLA).
These are plastics that can be re-melted and re-moulded into new products using heat, which means they can be recycled.
Plastics that contain “polymers that cross-link to form an irreversible chemical bond” are considered thermoset plastics. As the description suggests, no matter how much heat you apply, they cannot be remoulded into a new material and hence, are non-recyclable.
Plastic Recycling In The Automotive Industry
Plastic is a vital component of any vehicle, forming many of the comfortable mod cons in the interior as well as the necessary engine fixtures and fittings. Ensure you recycle your vehicle with a trusted scrap automotive dealer, which can provide proof of safe and responsible dismantling of your vehicle to minimise the impact on the environment.
